Principal Maher’s
Summer Reading Internet Nook
Woodglen Elementary
Research statements:
- The number of books read during the summer is consistently related to academic growth.
- Students who read six or more books during the summer vacation gained more in achievement than those students who did not.
- Students who read less in school and out of school are lower achieving students.
Ms. Maher is encouraging summer reading with a challenge. The challenge this summer is simple. Follow the title link to find books students have sent in so far. Wooglen students are to send Principal Maher a book log sheet about their reading. This challenge is voluntary. Each time a student sends a book log to Principal Maher, Ms. Maher will post the reply online and send a postcard response via mail to the student. Mrs. Maher will pick one student from each grade level that sent the most book letters. A special challenge token will be given to the student.
Here’s how the challenge works:
- On June 25th, a letter from Ms. Maher will be sent to all students.
- Students will read all summer long. Read as much as you can. Choose a book you have not read before. Make sure it is on your reading level.
- When you are finished reading the book, write to Ms. Maher by filling out the book log sheet. You can make copies for more or stop in the office to pick up more sheets. Younger students may have their parents help them write but students should discuss their answers.
- Make sure to fill out the book log sheet completely. On the back of the sheet, be sure to include your address and first and last name.
- Mail to: Ms. Maher, Woodglen Elementary, 121 Philips Hill Road, New City, NY, 10956 Attention: Summer Reading Challenge
- Ms. Maher will be collecting and posting your book logs on the school’s webpage so you can check the website weekly. Remember, though, the mail has to get to the school first.
- The contest will run to the start of school, September 7th.
Parents, there is no certification form for you to fill out. I only ask that you offer encouragement for reading and help our child stamp and mail the logs.
Remember, have fun and enjoy reading and writing.
Fondly,
Ms. Maher
