A recent note home to parents explained several technology changes in our district. I had written much of it, and was caught off guard when a parent and member of the technology committee mentioned she did not understand some of the content. In an email she commented, “Please let me know if I was/am unusual in not understanding all of this, and it is just me. I do believe the more information disseminated to parents, the better. The problem may be me!” It was not just her, and below is an explanation of Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) and Cloud Drives in plain English.
BYOT allows high school students and teachers to bring their own technology to school and connect to the Internet via the district’s wireless high speed connections. In our high schools, students can now use their cell phones, iPads, laptops, netbooks, and/or any other technology they bring in and connect to the internet in class or anywhere else in their school. The district assumes no responsibility for the devices, but provides access to wireless Internet access points throughout the school so that students can use their own technology in class as part of their learning experience. This supplements the district laptops, netbooks and desktops that are available in the schools.
With regard to cloud drives, this refers to the district’s decision to have students save their work on the internet, rather than keep it locked on computers and servers available to them only when they are in school. In September, the district will no longer offer local storage (on our own servers), but will provide storage space on the internet, via Google Drive and/or SchoolWebLockers. As Google states on the Google Drive home page, “wherever you are, your stuff is just…there. Ready to go, ready to share.”
