Chapter 7

chrismaryc1 on paragraph 139

Maybe Jolu was upset because Marcus is selfish? Or that Marcus never involved Jolu in anything, only Darryl? Maybe we’ll find out..

marisabela1 on paragraph 71

I think that Marcus makes a valid point in this argument. The fact that the computer system in looking for variations in patterns of traveling and suspecting them of criminal activity is ridiculous and could be avoided. As a human race we aren’t going to always do the same exact thing over and over again, events happen in life that would change someone’s day to day routine. Also, I would argue that the computer would also suspect someone of criminal activity if someone decided to be spontaneous and travel to different places.

I agree with the above comments relating to the opinion that Marcus has not learned his lesson. By cutting school, I think that yes he is expressing his freedom and maybe looking for the emotional rush of getting into trouble.

Marcus hasn’t learned his lesson. He is still getting into trouble by cutting school again. I see where is is coming from though because he is trying to keep his freedoms even though the government is watching his every move. If he isn’t careful something worse will happen to him.

I totally understand what you’re saying. Marcus is making the same wrong decision twice by cutting school again, and you would think after what he went through by being kidnapped he wouldn’t try it again. But Marcus is very determined and the government is is watching every single move that he makes. I think he’s more concerned with regaining his freedoms than something happening to him when he cuts school.

But i think marcus will only learn his lesson if it is a clear cut one. Like he touches a stove he gets burned, lesson learned. But as far as cutting school, he doesn't get it because it's not as clear to him..... if that makes any sense

Darian on paragraph 7

I don’t think it is a matter of recognizing authoritative figures, I think he is just trying to test what rights he still has left because it seems as though he is being stripped of all his rights. He wants the police to know that he knows what he is entitled to as a citizen of the United States.

But you can’t really blame Marcus for not stopping. The government is trapping him and he is trying to do whatever he can to regain simple freedoms without the government spying on every little thing he’s doing. I don’t think he is trying to over rule the government, I think he’s just a teenager trying to keep his privacy.

samanthar2 on paragraph 1

In order for Marcus to learn lessons regarding things he does wrong, he must be punished. I’m not quite sure what that punishment would be like or what it would consist of but I feel as though maybe he’d learn from his mistakes? Maybe not…maybe he’s just a lost cause. I guess we will never know…

I feel like the argument between Marcus and his father in this paragraph is a small scale example of the larger scale debate about the Patriot Act today. They help portray both sides of peoples arguments about the separation of peoples personal lives from the government in todays society.
