It surprises me that the voice of the authorities is described as the voice of God in this situation, when protestors are unable to convene. I think its contradictory because the voice of God probably would not cause chaos or an uprising like the authorities did by showing up and making demands of a large group of people.

I think that the reason people are interested in reading this novel is because it incldues a lot about teenage love and some people can relate to. This is one of the many issues that teens can relate to while reading this story.

the irony in the oblivious adults statement about the kids being brainwashed is good, and somewhat symbolic of most adult views on younger peoples behavior

The DHS is truly taking over everything. Now they are even teaching at schools. I wonder of the DHS is targeting Marcus or just everyone in general.

I personally agree with sam. I believe that we as Americans do not care enough about our past, and the “important” things that happen in this world. Unfortunately the media has portrayed many things in the wrong way, and we as a society are molded into what the news and media want us to believe.

i agree with raven, people dont realize how much freedom we have, especially compared to other countries. People should be more concerned about learning things about the bill of rights and our amendments rather than stalking the jonas brothers like myself. People should be more appreciative of what they have and realize how lucky we are to be able to do what we do.

The government didnt like what Ms. Galvez was teaching so they just replace her. They want the students to know information that they think is suitable for the class. Just like they did with the FastTrak and their bus passes, they have found another way to force people to do or learn what they think they should.

This shows that the government and the school are trying to force the kids to obey their rules and policies. They will stop at nothing to maintain order and stop people like Ms. Galvez from teaching the students unnecessary information.

elizabethp on paragraph 83

Okay I’ve had a “mild” scotch bonnet. Those things are dangerously hot if you don’t eat spicy food often. When I say hot, I don’t mean gulp down water for 5 minutes hot. I’m talking tear inducing, drink milk and eat bread for the rest of the day, face is on fire, “oh my god, my head is going to explode” hot. I eat spicy food often and even I don’t mess with stuff that spicy. If this is what she considers milld, i’d be deathly terrified of anything that’s close to the millions on the Scoville scale.

dionas1 replies to ravenm1 on paragraph 25

I totally agree with what Raven said. On late night shows when they go out on street corners and ask people things about the Declaration of Independence or the Bill of Rights, some people don’t even know what they are! Its disturbing. I feel like if people were informed about these two things, they could actually be active, helpful members of society and possibly change things for the better.

most people in today's society don't appreciate the words of the declaration of independence and even the bill of rights. most people can't even name the first line of the preamble. it's sad and unappreciated which with the amount of freedom and independence we actually have, we should be grateful for it everyday and have knowledge of the significance of such powerful documents.

remym1 on paragraph 14

This is one of the most immature interpretations of the Declaration of Independence there is. Yes, it grants the people the right to overthrow a tyrannical government, but not one with whom you disagree. Of course Marcus did not vote for the current government. He is a minor. And like any other person whose party lost the election, he should consider the fact that the majority presumably DID vote for the current government, and there are appropriate channels to use to enact change, namely vote differently in the next election. That being said, his concerns are valid with the specific actions of the DHS that he is objecting to. It is, however, important to realize that this is the type of talk that is easily misinterpreted and can lead to the belief that the people have the right to overthrow or usurp any legitimate government that does something they do not disagree with.

history repeats itself yet again. this is like the scopes trial in 1925. scope was fired for teaching evolution to his students and now Ms Galvez was fired for teaching her students about the protests from the sixties. this, if anything, should be more evidence of the government being corrupt.
