Have you ever wondered what glaze is made from?

Each year, Ceramics students marvel at the evolution of the appearance of glaze from the bottle to what it looks like after it has been fired in the kiln.

In November, Ms. Dunn and her students investigated the chemical make-up of glazes to uncover the science behind the process.  With the help of Chemistry teacher Ms. McCarthy, students made connections between the common components of glazes (fluxes, colorants, oxides, stabilizers, opacifiers and glass formers) and the periodic table.
